Hudhud as they perceive

The graphic description of the cyclone Hudhud that devastated north coastal Andhra Pradesh a month ago by group of 10 final year students of Bachelor of Fine Arts of Andhra University is set to feature in the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014.

The students were selected by artist Faiza Hassan, curator for students’ section for institutions in South India.

The curator spent time studying their works and also the work these artists would be submitting to the Biennale.

Twelve works by the students have been put on display at the Department of Fine Arts on Tuesday.

The works can be seen even on Wednesday.

These works would be sent to the Kochi Biennale, scheduled to begin on December 13 and would be on for three months there.

While the underlying theme is Cyclone Hudhud and the destruction it caused, the 10 artistes — Rajasekhar T, Srinivas D, Srinivas P, Ch. Nookaraju, Varma, Karthik T, Rama Devi, Sirish K, Pradeep K, and Maruthi Manohar — have used different media and forms of expression. Predominantly done in black and white, they are based on pencil sketches of the reality around us.

Among the works are a mixed media, pencil on paper, two typography art, ink and brush, and found object.

While as a group the works vividly describe the devastation, each of them by itself is a comprehensive essay on the suffering of the people due to the natural calamity.
