VISAKHAPATNAM: The GVMC plans to supply tertiary treated water from its sewage treatment plant to the industry.
The GVMC proposes to take up underground drainage facility for Malkapuram and Gajuwaka, covering most of the industrial area. The UGD project is proposed to be taken up in association with the Andhra Pradesh Urban Infrastructure Asset Management Company.
“At present, the 108 MLD STP’s capacity is being proposed for utilisation at half its capacity. Once the UGD work at Malkapuram and Gajuwaka is taken up, it will be linked to the STP at Narava, utilising the remaining capacity,” Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan told The Hindu.

Eighty per cent of the water from the STPs will be useful for tertiary treatment.
The secondary treated water would be taken up for tertiary treatment at Narava and then will be supplied to the industry, Mr. Hari Narayanan said.
Earlier, a project on supply of tertiary treated water had been worked out. It is pending with government, it is learnt.

As a preliminary exercise, Mr. Hari Narayanan held a meeting with bulk consumers, including the steel plant, NTPC and Hinduja power plants, HPCL, Railways, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, and Coromandel, among others.
The industrial and bulk consumers were asked to specify their requirement for tertiary treated water and the rate they would offer.
They were reportedly informed that tertiary treated water would be made a part of any further bulk supplies.
As of now, the GVMC has STPs at One Town, Appu Ghar, and Mudasarlova, and the one of 54 MLD capacity at Narava is on trial.
The GVMC is also of the view that if the treated water being supplied to bulk consumers is replaced with water from the STPs, it will also ease the situation in regular water supply.
The GVMC, as of now, is supplying 3.6 million litres of secondary treated water to the port trust and Essar steels, it is learnt.
