Prema Samajam, social welfare organisation working for the destitute and needy, is in the news for all the wrong reasons.

A life member of the organisation P.V. Mohan Reddy along with four other life members made serious allegations on the present governing body, particularly against treasurer P. Visweswara Rao, at a media conference here on Monday.

Mr. Mohan Reddy, social worker, who had studied at the Prema Samajam High School between 1966 and 1973 alleged that the present governing body, which was in office since September, 2011, was indulging in corruption in the procurement of groceries, purchasing sub-standard equipment like solar heaters and changing the by-laws to suit its convenience. Mr. Reddy said Prema Samajam has fixed and movable assets, all valued at around Rs.600 crore. The funds of the organisation were deposited in a private bank instead of nationalised banks. According to the old by laws, there was a 10-member service committee and 10-member non-service committee and after the present body abolished the 10-member service committee the downfall of the organisation had started, he said.

The present body had also withdrawn activities like rushing to the aid of fire victims, when fires occur in the district and distribution of old clothes, collected from donors, to the poor and needy in various areas. The practice of receiving cooked food from donors for serving to the inmates was also withdrawn.
