Youth and the aged thronged blood donation camps in the city voluntarily on Monday to repose their faith in helping fellow human beings by giving the gift of life, on the occasion of the World Blood Donors' Day-2010. The city currently needs one lakh units a year, while all blood banks were able to collect only a little above 60,000 units.
District Medical and Health Office in association with King George Hospital and Victoria Government Hospital organised rallies and seminars to make the medical fraternity rededicate their services in providing safe blood to the patients. The VGH honoured some frequent donors at an impressive function among who was N. Nageswara Rao of ‘Vision' evening daily.
The members of Sri Swamy Vivekananda Voluntary Organisation donated blood at the Indian Red Cross Blood Bank. The programme was formally launched by Visakhapatnam South MLA Dronamraju Srinivas at which 55 enthusiasts led by organisation founder CMA Zaheer Ahmed donated blood.

Rotary Blood Bank in association with Manipal Hospitals with the help of its management and staff collected 60 units at a special camp launched by blood bank secretary K. Venkateswara Rao in the presence of hospital general manager K. Sudhakar.
Aditya Degree College National Service Scheme units were given a special prize during a programme on Andhra University campus for donating 450 units and MVR College of Gajuwaka was given a consolation prize for their efforts in blood donation.
The AU Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy formally opened the blood donation camp on the campus at which Assistant Director Drug Administration Ravi Uday Bhaskar explained the importance of voluntary blood donation. While 400 volunteers participated in the programme, 72 students donated blood.
