Farmers staged a dharna in front of the Sub-Collector’s office here on Wednesday to register their protest against the ordinance brought in by the Centre, amending the Land Acquisition Act, alleging that such move had diluted the provisions.
The dharna was organised by the Youth Congress as part of its Kisan Satyagraha. The Youth Congress has launched a campaign against the ordinance. Vijayawada Parliament Constituency Youth Congress president Devineni Avinash said that several rallies were conducted to register protest against the raw deal being meted out to farmers. Farmers were not getting remunerative prices because of the low Minimum Support Price (MSP) being fixed by the government.
There was an acute shortage of urea and the compensation packages were also meagre, he said.

The meeting assumes significance in the light of the latest political developments including the party’s decision to field its nominee for Tirupati bypolls and the party is expected to evolve a plan against the TDP government’s “anti-people” policies. The party is expected to focus on issues related to loan waiver and the construction of the new capital. City president Malladi Vishnu said the meeting would be held in Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in the evening. A rally would also be taken out on the occasion, he said .
