Members of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Workers, Teachers and Employees' Joint Action Committee (JAC) staged a dharna in the city on Thursday demanding solution to their problems.
The protestors carrying placards staged a dharna at Kothapeta Nehru Statue and at water tank, near Gandhiji Municipal High School. They urged the government to pay salaries regularly through ‘010 account' (Treasury Department), regularise temporary staff, take up recruitments to fill the vacancies in different wings, provide health cards for all employees and abolish outsourcing and contract employment system in the corporation.
Addressing the gathering, JAC convenor D. Eshwar said that the VMC employees were facing severe hardship as the government was not paying salaries regularly for the past three years.

About 4,000 employees, including bill collectors, sanitary inspectors, sanitary maistrys, work inspectors, Class IV employees, those at vehicle depots, drainage workers, manning streetlights, drivers and Office Subordinates Associations affiliated to the INTUC, CITU and INTUC participated in the strike.
Even as the association leaders submitted representations seeking solution to their problems, the officials failed to do justice to the staff, Mr. Eshwar alleged.

JAC co-convenor J. James said that the JAC members were doing lunch-hour dharnas in support of their demands. The protestors will launch relay fast on March 12 and organise a pen-down strike on March 14.
