Students of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala were told to be assertive, especially when it comes to women’s rights, by Family Court Judge, U. Satya Rao. He was addressing the students on the occasion of International Women’s Day here on Saturday on the theme ‘The role of women in strengthening democracy’.
The judge reminded the students of their democratic rights and urged them to take politics seriously. “A political career should not be treated as the last option. It is time that brilliant and bright students take up politics, as the very foundation of good democracy stands on health and meaningful political discourse in the parliament,” he said.
Mr. Satya Rao further added that a meaningful debate, be it on an important legislation or an other issue was possible only when the legislators themselves were highly educated, motivated and intelligent.

“The present scenario in Parliament gives a contrasting image,” he said.
Lok Satta Vice- President (Mahila wing) P. Sarala Kumari said that women should take more active role in politics. She pointed out women should voice their concern in the parliament more vociferously. Jana Vigyana Vedika President T. Sri Kumar said that about 60 per cent of the workforce in the IT/ITES companies today comprises women and despite that there is no let up in foeticide, honour killing, dowry deaths, molestation and domestic violence, and unfortunately it is happening even within the educated class.
JVV convenor Kusuma Kumari in her address pointed out that International Women’s Day is not about exchanging greeting cards and patronising discount sale, offered in connection with the women’s day, in malls and shopping centres.

“This is the 103rd International Women’s Day and it was coined only after the women workforce endured a long history of struggle across nations. It should be celebrated but their sacrifice also should be remembered,” said Ms. Kusuma Kumari.
