Trunk road project to be completed soon

Encroachments to be cleared to speed up pending works

Koneru Sridhar, City Mayor.

Commuting on the road from Chuttugunta Centre to Kabela Junction has become quite a task for motorists. With the narrow stretch being crammed with vehicles, traffic moving at a snail’s pace has become the order of the day.

In the past, the authorities had constructed a flyover in the locality, leaving narrow space beneath it and motorists find it difficult to shuttle across the stretch.

Following repeated complaints, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) had commenced laying main trunk road and last year, works were awarded to a private contractor under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Though majority of the works have been completed, the stretch from Chuttugunta Centre to Kabela was delayed owing to various reasons, including encroachment issues and blame-game between Roads and Buildings Department and the VMC for taking up different works. On Friday, City Mayor Koneru Sridhar, along with VMC officials, inspected the works and sought details pertaining to the status of the project, being implemented at a cost Rs.1.25 crore.

Authorities informed that except for the 600-metre stretch from Chuttugunta Centre to Kabela Junction, all other works have been completed. In response, the Mayor instructed the officials to clear the encroachments and complete the pending works at the earliest. “All the encroachments will be cleared and we have instructed the contractor to complete the works in 30 days,” said an engineering wing official.

Meanwhile, with just one day remaining for the Republic Day celebrations, the VMC officials are intensifying measures to ensure cleanliness and hygiene at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium, the venue for the celebrations.

VMC In-charge Commissioner G. Nagaraju monitored the sanitation works at the venue and wanted the officials to lay emphasis on clearing the blockages in drains in the locality.

“All roads leading to the stadium should be clean ,” said Mr. Nagaraju.
