A team of the Telugu Desam Party’s Vijayawada urban unit visited social welfare hostels to assess the facilities provided to inmates in view of the re-opening of schools on June 12.
The team, led by party’s urban unit vice-president L. Sairam Prasad Gowd, in a letter to the district Collector, has represented the cause of the hostel students.
They said during their visit to these hostels, they had found that there were no proper toilets or even sufficient lighting and fans in rooms. Pointing to the fact that textbooks had not arrived in the market so far, they said without them, students would face problems in understanding their lessons.

The inmates of these hostels were waiting for distribution of school uniforms, bedsheets, soaps and other articles to fulfil their basic needs. Many hostels were housed in private buildings. This, despite several promises by the Government on construction of permanent buildings for social welfare hostels, they said.
They also demanded steps to control fee structure in private educational institutions besides immediate repairs to damaged school and hostel buildings in view of the ensuing monsoon season.
Referring to the on-going ‘Vidya Sambarallu’ kicked off by the Education Department, they said money spent on the publicity of the programme should be diverted for welfare of students from the weaker sections of society.
