Superintendent of Police Gopinath Jatti on Monday launched the e-challan mode for penalising vehiclists for traffic violations in Kurnool district.

Police officers above sub-inspector rank were imparted a month-long training and given Point of Sales machines and tabs with the e-challan app installed to levy penalty by generating realtime challans for traffic violations such as overspeeding, rash and negligent driving, triple riding, drunken driving and not wearing helmets, the SP told the media in Vyas conference hall here. On generation of e-challan, SMS alerts would be sent to the vehicle owner and driver and they should pay the panelty within 15 days, he said.

The violators can pay fines by cashless mode on the PoS machines. The driving licence would be cancelled and vehicle owners prosecuted after three violations, Mr. Gopinath said. The fine can also be paid in Mee Seva centres and in police stations using debit and credit cards. The e-challan system already in vogue in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, was brought into force on Monday, he said.

Eighteen to 20 traffic signal points were identified in Kurnool city and an agency was being entrusted the task of setting up traffic signals. Traffic would be streamlined, cent per cent functioning of traffic signals and cc cameras would be ensured in the next two months, Mr. Gopinath assured. Additional SP Shaik Shavali and DSPs D.V.
