Sunday (January 25) is an auspicious day for marriages. Wedding bells will ring for couples waiting to tie the knot, but their kin coming from distant places may find it difficult to join the celebrations. This is owing to the apparent clash between ‘auspiciousness’ and ‘patriotism’.

The frenzied activity in several households in the run-up to the ‘suba muhurthams’ (auspicious time) for marriages on Sunday and Monday (January 25 and 26) overlaps with an emotional wave of patriotism that has gripped the administration ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. “Sunday is an auspicious day for Telugu marriages. But, rooms in almost all hotels in the city have been blocked for VVIPs who will descend on the city to attend the first Republic Day celebrations post-bifurcation,” says Ilapuram Raja, president of Vijayawada Hotel Owners’ Association.

MROs have asked hotel managements to block rooms for guests. “We have blocked 120-odd hotel rooms for officials,” says MRO Siva Rao who has been booking rooms for guests.
