CPI(M) city central committee secretary T. Vishnu Vardhan on Monday demanded immediate removal of garbage piles from Singh Nagar area as promised by the local body and threatened to launch an agitation if no action was taken in 15 days.

Speaking to mediapersons, he alleged that the State government and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation were not taking steps for the welfare of public and cited several examples, including the Jakkampadi housing project.

“The authorities promised to clear the garbage piles which were causing ill-health to denizens. They said the garbage will be shifted to a recycling plant at Guntur but no efforts were made,” he said.

Though the authorities promised to provide houses to the poor at Jakkampudi nothing had been done and the intention of the government was to keep the issue pending and make it an election promise in 2019, he alleged.

Even though houses were built in Rajarajeswaripet, they were not given to the poor. The houses in and around the city were given away to the followers of Telugu Desam leaders, he alleged.

Mr. Vishnuvardhan said a two-day city conclave was held on December 8 and 9 in which the party elected a 19-member city central committee to fight on various local issues.
