Purandeswari is BJP Seemandhra poll panel chief

March 22, 2014 10:05 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 11:45 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Amid intense speculation that former Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari will be the frontrunner for the prestigious Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat of the BJP, she has been appointed convener of the party’s election campaign committee for Seemandhra.

BJP Seemandhra president K. Haribabu lent credence to the theory by making an announcement to that effect here on Saturday. The proposed alliance with the TDP may change the situation quickly as either of them will be prepared to forego the Vijayawada seat. Right now the only candidate who fits the bill – both in stature and political acumen - is Ms. Purandeswari, who, many think is capable of wresting the seat from the Congress.

Ms. Purandeswari’s appointment as the poll panel chief is seen more as conferring on her the responsibility to boost the party’s sagging fortunes in these parts of the State. Her biggest challenge will be to convey the message that BJP is the only party which can transform Seemandhra as a developed State following the bifurcation.

Poll committees

The party has appointed 18 committees such as the election, election management and campaign committees. The first two committees are headed by Mr. Haribabu and Somu Veerraju respectively.

These committees will draft the plan of action with the single-point agenda of securing victory in the maximum number of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Seemandhra.
