The Police Commissionerate closed the year by booking 11,344 cases under various crime categories and sections, as compared to 9,802 the previous year. This was disclosed at the annual crime meeting held in Vijayawada on Friday.
The stated figures were up to December 20, said Police Commissioner B. Srinivasulu.
Heading the list of crimes were petty thefts, which included lifting of cellphones, bikes, and picking pockets, with 2,087 cases, compared to 1,354 cases in 2012.

The other figures included murder 33, murder for gain 3, dacoity 2, robbery 63, house burglary 314, kidnap for ransom 1, marital and family dispute 52, rape 6, physical attack 812, cheating 382, section 304 — causing death by negligence — 313, section 337/338 — causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others — 1064, death under mysterious circumstances 597, missing 730, and preventive arrests and fire accidents 1,208.
With regard to dowry harassment, the police had booked 1,185 cases compared to 1,105 in 2012. In total, there was a loss of about Rs.7.7 crore in various theft cases and police recovered property worth about Rs.4 crore.
The police also busted 28 chain-snatching gangs and the total number of cases booked was 142 amounting to a loss of about Rs.66 lakh and the department recovered property worth Rs.27 lakh.

Eve-teasing Under eve-teasing, the police rounded up 45 rowdy-sheeters and about 290 suspect-sheeters.
