Candidates have filed nominations for the gram sarpanch and panchayati ward member posts despite it being an inauspicious day on Tuesday. According to the notification time has been given from 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday to 5 p.m. on July 13 for filing of nominations.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will begin at 11 a.m. on July 14 and it will go on till 5 p.m. on July 15. The list of eligible candidates will be put on announced on July 17.
As many as 61 candidates filed nominations for surpanch posts in the district on the first day.

The division-wise break of the number of nominations filed for surpanch posts are Nuzvid 18, Vijayawada 11, Bandar 17 and Gudivada 15.
With regard to the panchyat ward member posts 115 candidates filed nominations on the first day. The division-wise break up of the number of nominations filed for wards is Nuzvid 33, Vijayawada 15, Bandar 51 and Gudivada 16. The fact that the day was “amavasya” (new moon day) did not deter these candidates from filing their papers. Most of the aspirants are expected to file nominations on Wednesday.
While the dates for filing nominations and scrutiny are the same for gram panchayats in all four revenue divisions, the 279 panchayats in 14 mandals of the Nuzvid division will be going to poll on July 23 in the first phase. The 238 panchayats in the Vijayawada division will go to poll in the second phase on July 27 and the 234 panchayats in the 12 mandals of Machilipatnam and 219 panchayats in Gudivada division will go to poll on July 31, the last phase of elections.

Elections are being conducted to 970 gram panchayats in the district. The authorities have declared 150 of them as major panchayats and 820 others as minor panchayats. The total number of wards is 9,918.
