‘No leads to SIMI activists in city’

June 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

DGP J.V. Ramudu admitted on Sunday that police have not been able to track the movements of suspected SIMI activists who are believed to have visited Vijayawada recently.

Back in April, two SIMI activists were intercepted from a Vijayawada-bound bus at Suryapet by the Telangana Police. They were overcome after a two-day-long engagement.

An associate of the duo is suspected to have eluded police , and leads from the case pointed to the possibility that banned SIMI activists have extended their footprint to Vijayawada. The AP police picked up the leads but their investigations have not made any progress, said the DGP.

“It’s a fact that suspected SIMI activists visited Vijayawada. But we could not track their movements,” he added.

Replying to a question on burning of crops at Thullur , Mr. Ramudu said: “I never told you (media) that I will detect all the cases.”

Miscreants damaged the crops at six places in Thullur and its neighbouring villages in the proposed capital region in December last. Asked about the progress of the case, the DGP said: “How can the media pose such a question to the DGP. I don’t want to reply to it.”
