30 women honoured as part of Mothers-in-Law Day celebration

The role of a mother-in-law needs to be celebrated as she is the special woman who brought the love of your life into this world. She makes room for her expanding family, she works relentlessly to ensure her children to be whole and secure, said Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, here on Sunday.

He was addressing a meeting organised in connection with Mothers-in-Law Day celebration, organised by The Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati (CCVA), in collaboration with Andhra Arts Academy (AAA) and Sridevi Cultural and Social Welfare Society (SSCWS).

It was a unique platform created by the three organisations to honour 30-odd mothers-in-law based on their audio speeches selected from the lot. The MLA said respecting mothers-in-law and treating them on a par with one’s mother was part of Indian culture and cited examples from Mahabharata and Ramayana.

CCVA CEO E. Sivanagi Reddy threw light on the origin of the day and spoke at length about the activities taken up worldwide on this day. He said like Mother’s Day in May, people celebrated Mothers-in-Law Day on the fourth Sunday in October every year.

Former Director of All India Radio, Vijayawada, M. Krishna Kumari emphasised the need for mutual respect between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law. She took strong exception to what she called “sending a wrong message” by a biased portrayal of a mother-in-law who was always shown as a negative character by a few TV serials.

Chairperson of SSCWS D. Sridevi, Andhra Academy president Golla Narayana Rao and others were present.
