The department of zoology organised a seminar at the Maris Stella College on the topic “Stop cancer in its tracks”. The objective of the seminar was to create awareness among women on breast and cervix cancers, as these seem to be affecting women at large.
The seminar was organised to mark November as the month of cancer awareness. The speakers on the occasion said that cancers were now occupying the second position in causing deaths in most countries and India was no exception.
About 90 per cent of breast cancers were due to genetic abnormalities and only five to 10 per cent were because of inheritance from parents.

Dr. I.V. Renuka, professor of pathology and head of the department, Guntur Medical College, and chief guest said that cervical cancer was preventable if certain precautions were taken. She threw light on mammogram, and tests to detect cervical cancers. She made a Power Point presentation and showed slides on the malignant growth of tumour cells.
The speakers said that cancer was a neo plastic disease which is a malignant new growth of carcinoma. The cancers in men are most likely to develop in the skin, lungs, prostate glands, stomach, intestine, mouth and so on. In women, the cancers affect mostly breast, uterus, cervix, intestine, stomach and skin. Today cancers can be cured if enough awareness is created among all people.

Meanwhile, the Maris Stella College conducted a workshop on mathematics as part of the college's golden jubilee celebrations. Expert faculty provided information on various skills in mathematics. There were also paper presentations and so on.
