Here is some good news for environment lovers. The Wildlife Management authorities of the Forest Department launched a project at Manuguluru village, on the borders of Krishna and West Godavari districts.
The project involves development of a new habitat for birds on the lines of Atapaka Birds Sanctuary, located in Kaikalur mandal, to attract the tourists. “Manuguluru Birds Sanctuary is situated adjacent to the National Highway. The tourist spot, close to Eluru and Vijayawada, will be developed with the help of local villagers,” said Kaikalur Forest Range Officer (FRO) of Eluru Wildlife Management division A. Sunil Kumar.
An Environmental Education Centre, park, pedal boating, mini jettys, refreshment stalls and other amenities would be provided for the visitors. A watch tower is planned for the bird lovers who throng the sanctuary. “We are planning to create artificial mounds, iron stands and plantation on the mounds for Pelicans, Painted Storks and other birds for nesting and brooding. The replicas and paintings of the birds and their habits would be displayed in the education centre to the visitors,” Mr. Sunil Kumar said. The government has constituted an Eco Development Committee with locals in Manuguluru village. Refreshment stalls would be set up by the villagers to provide livelihood for them.

“Our aim is to protect Kolleru Lake, animals and birds by involving the villagers. The staff is creating awareness among the public on the need to protect the environment,” said the officer. “We will open the sanctuary for the public soon,” the FRO said.
