Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Rajesh Kumar on Thursday flagged off a motor cycle rally as part of the road safety awareness campaign taken up by the Road Transport Authority, Guntur.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kumar said road accidents were mostly due to rash and negligent driving and suggested that two-wheeler users use helmet as a precautionary measure.
“The use of helmet may cause some inconvenience, but vehicle users, particularly those using two-wheelers, are in danger of losing their lives in accidents, and by wearing helmets, they can at least avoid fatal head injuries,” the officer said.

The SP added that he had found that the use of helmets in the State was low in comparison with that in other States.
Deputy Transport Commissioner V. Sundar said that RTA Guntur was organising a series of campaigns to promote road safety. “The number of fatalities in accidents in 2013 was comparatively low than in 2012. In the year 2013, 714 people died in 1,968 road accidents,” he said
In 2014 (up to June), the number of causalities has been 238 in 932 accidents.

Earlier, the RTA held an awareness session on road safety for students of Loyola Public School, Nallapadu. During the session, Deputy Transport Commissioner V. Sundar explained basic road safety measures, including using left lanes for walking, use of zebra line for crossing the road and avoiding rash driving. LPS principal Fr. Uvari Tony was present.
