October 20, 2013 10:50 am | Updated 10:50 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal at a relay hunger strike camp of city Congress leader P.Vijayakuamar, at Sub-Collector’s office in Vijayawada on Saturday.

Contrary to the indications given by his followers Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal gave a ‘clean chit’ to Central Minister Daggupati Purandeswari and her husband Venkateswara Rao. Several of Mr. Rajagopal’s followers were up in arms against the Central Minister for meeting a cross section of local leaders when she came here recently.

The MP, who was in the city in informal chats with the media, said that Ms. Purandeswari was only concerned about the steps needed to develop Krishna district in the aftermath of bifurcation. “I have spoken to the Duggubati couple on telephone. They are for Samaikyandhra,” the MP said.

Resignations

On the Speaker Meira Kumar rejecting the resignations of the MPs, Mr. Rajagopal said that anxiety about the strength of the Congress MPs plummeting in the Lok Sabha may have influenced the Speaker to reject the resignations.

The MP said that the Seemandhra MPs were going to approach her again on Monday to press her to accept the resignations.

He said Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy was totally committed to keeping the State from division. “I have not seen a Chief Minister like him,” he said and added that the Chief Minister would be soon hitting the road to promote awareness about the loss the division of the State would cause to the people of both regions.

The MP said that he would also fight the bifurcation legally and because of Article 371 (D) nothing short of a constitutional amendment was needed for dividing the State.

Mr. Rajagopal said that it was unfortunate that the Central Government put aside the Sri Krishna Committee Report. Though the Central Government may not change its mind on bifurcation the exercise could be stopped, he said.
