Vijayawada West MLA Jaleel Khan has criticised the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) for its negligence in taking up civic works in the constituency, especially the construction of underground drainage system, storm water drains, desilting of canals and laying roads to deal with the coming monsoon season.

There has been a long-pending demand for the construction of an underground drainage system in the constituency, particularly in One Town area.

After much pressure, the authorities laid a few pipelines at bypass road and other areas in the past. “Most of the pipelines have been damaged and have got defunct due to poor planning,” alleged Mr. Khan at a media conference here on Thursday.

This apart, many localities in One Town area continue to remain waterlogged every rainy season in the absence of proper storm water drains. Main roads and by lanes are in a poor condition and residents are facing lot of problems. When approached, the corporation authorities expressed their helplessness in solving the issue, citing fund crunch as a reason.

Traffic snarls

“Most importantly, the auspicious ‘Pushkaralu’ for Godavari and Krishna rivers have been slated for next year and the authorities are yet to plan measures for the arrangements. As it is, traffic regulation at Durga temple is a big challenge and frequent traffic jams are a common scene in the city. It is high time, the VMC prepare a master plan for taking up different civic works in the constituency,” demanded Mr. Khan.

Naidu flayed

Taking a dig at Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Mr. Khan said that Vijayawada West Constituency had been receiving a step-motherly treatment from the government since many years. “Mr. Naidu has assured construction of a flyover at Durga Temple and other developmental works in the constituency, but all his promises have been confined to papers,” he said.
