Inspired by film, students resort to chain snatching

Gang, including two degree students, committed six offences in Krishna district: police

Four chain snatchers including two college students and a minor were arrested by the district police at Hanuman Junction on Tuesday. Producing the accused before media, Krishna district SP Sarvasresth Tripathy said they were found moving suspiciously on two motorcycles at Komatigunta crossroad near Verravalli village on Monday evening. The gang was involved in six chain snatchings recently, he said.

The accused included a degree second-year student in the C.R. Reddy College, Eluru, a degree first-year student in the Aditya College, Eluru, a 17-year-old mason and another youth working as a clerk in a soft drink company. All the accused hailed from Satrampadu colony of Eluru town in the West Godavari district and had targeted lone women in the areas between Vijayawada and Hanuman Junction in the nights, the police said.

The gang resorted to snatch chains after watching the Tamil dubbing movie ‘Metro’ which highlights the menace in cities.

They robbed women at the APIIC Colony in Vijayawada, Vidyanagar in Eluru, Telaprolu centre, Gannavaram, Hanuman Junction and Gudivada.

The gang sold the gold to mediators in Vijayawada and had holiday trips, purchased sporty motorcycles, clothes and others.

Gold chains weighing about 120 grams and two motorcycles were seized from them.

The accused were produced before the court on Tuesday.
