CPI (M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao has accused MLAs Malladi Vishnu and Vellampalli Srinivas of getting houses constructed under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) allotted to their party activists and near and dear and even submitting a list containing up to 2,000 names of such dubious beneficiaries, to the Municipal Commissioner.

Even a conservative estimate of the value of houses at Rs. 5,00,000 per unit puts the scandal at over Rs. 100 crore, said Babu Rao at a press conference here on Friday.

The housing colony at Jakkampudi touted as the State’s largest urban agglomeration, was ‘a model in corruption’, Mr. Babu Rao said. Financial allocations were not made to about 5,000 houses even after their construction was completed and nearly 3,000 houses at New Rajarajeswaripet faced similar problem due to court cases. The genuine beneficiaries were facing a lot of difficulty because of the government’s negligence. Mr. Babu Rao demanded that the Municipal Commissioner should make public the list of beneficiaries so that the stark facts could be brought to light and inquire into the alleged scandal. Party leaders D. Kasinath, D. Vishnuvardhan and U.V. Rama Raju were present.
