Two days of heavy rain has exposed the chinks in the storm water drainage system in Guntur.
As rain kept pounding even as cyclone ‘Nilam’ weakened over the coast in Tamil Nadu, streets in residential areas resembled cesspools.
Streets in Brodipet, Arundelpet, Lakshmipuram, Chandramouli Nagar, Vidya Nagar, and Navabharat Nagar were inundated partially due to overflowing outfall drains.

For some time, residents of Chandramouli Nagar, 7th lane, were rubbing their eyes in disbelief as water surged through the streets.
But soon water receded and released to a major outfall drain.
The major outfall drain, Peekala Vagu, overflowed at certain areas, leading to tense moments, but GMC officials swung into action and removed the debris in the drains.

The civic officials removed debris at IPD Colony and made it easy for the water to flow.
Commuters were forced to wade through knee deep waters at Kothapet and in parts of Nallacheruvu.
District Collector S. Suresh Kumar, along with Municipal Commissioner K. Sudhakar, visited several low-lying areas and directed the operations.
Mr. Suresh Kumar, along with Mr. Sudhakar, visited Yadava Bazaar in One Town and monitored the cleaning operation.
Later, they visited areas in Balaji Nagar, Suddapalli Donka, IPD Colony, Rajiv Gruha Kalpa Complex at Balaji Nagar, Gujjangundla, and Donka Road.
The Collector directed the Commissioner to submit a detailed plan of network of existing major and minor outfall drains on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner A. Latif and engineering officials were present.
