The management of Vijayawada Gosamrakshana Sangam allegedly served stale food killing 21 cows in gosala recently. Few other cows fell sick after consuming the food.
According to police, the owner of Bhavani Traders supplied 15 bags of Bombay Ravva to gosala in April this year. After consuming the Ravva, many cows fell sick and a few died on April 29. The One Town police arrested Bhavani Traders owner Kollipara Sambasiva Rao, who allegedly donated the stale ravva, which caused mass mortality of the cows. Police recorded the statements of few other sangam members including gosala manager, Lavanya, in the case. During investigation it was revealed that, Bhavani Traders purchased the material on December 10, last year and the expiry date was 30 days (January 2015). But, Mr. Sambasiva Rao donated the left over material to gosala in April, and the organisers accepted the ravva without checking the quality.
“Gosala management is not maintaining the list of the donors and any inward registers. The death of cows occurred due to negligence and failure of the management,” said One Town Circle Inspector P. Venkateswarlu who is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, members of the Sangam approached the High Court (HC) as the police asked to vacate the place at Arjuna Veedhi, following the death of cows. The HC reportedly issued orders stating that gosala can continue in the same place. “We asked gosala organisers to shift the cows, cleanse the place with cleaning acid, bleaching powder and phenol as 21 cows died in the shed and many fell sick. The incident caused panic and insanitation feeling among the residents in the area. Police have not asked to shift the gosala,” Mr. Venkateswarlu clarified.
