August 11, 2011 02:40 pm | Updated 02:40 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Vijayawada Sub-Collector S. Venkat Rao on Wednesday said that rehabilitation measures were taken as soon as fire broke out. The revenue officials identified that 83 families suffered loss. Another 15 families stated that their names did not figure in the victims' list.

Vijayawada (East) MLA Yelamanchili Ravi hailed the services of voluntary organisations for the people who lost their houses in Tuesday's fire accident at Tarakarama Nagar in Ranigarithota.

He distributed clothes and vessels kits among victims at the Krishnalanka Community Hall on Wednesday. The Indian Red Cross Society provided the kits to about 100 families which suffered loss in the fire. Though the Government took necessary measures to help the victims, the help of voluntary organisations was also important, he opined.

It was laudable that the Indian Red Cross Society was extending all possible help to people during natural calamities and fire mishaps, he added. Inquiry would be conducted into all claims, and compensation paid to them, the Sub-Collector said.

The Government was giving Rs. 5,000 compensation, and Rs.3,000 worth for cooking vessels and clothes to every family. This apart, 20kg rice would be distributed free of cost to them, he added.

Indian Red Cross Society district president Sridhar Reddy, treasurer Ella Ravi, civil supplies officer P. Sivarama Prasad, and Youth Red Cross president Velaga Joshi were present.
