Engineers’ panel suggests 3 locations for capital

Gokavaram village near Rajahmundry, Nuzvid in Krishna district and Kaza village near Nagarjuna University campus have been suggested as ideal locations for the new capital

The Institution of Engineers India (IEI), Vijayawada chapter, has suggested three options for setting up the new capital of residuary Andhra Pradesh.

IEI local chapter president P. Ravindra Babu on Tuesday said a committee had been formed to make a representation to the K.C. Siva Rama Krishnan Committee constituted by the Union government to make recommendations on the location of the capital.

Mr. Babu said the IEI committee had zeroed in on three locations for the Siva Rama Krishnan Committee to make a choice.

He said taking into consideration the guidelines issued by the Siva Rama Krishnan Committee, Gokavaram village near Rajahmundry, Nuzvid in Krishna district and Kaza village near Nagarjuna University campus were suggested as the ideal locations.

The committee, headed by former IEI local centre chairman Ch.Venkateswarlu, also suggested that Vizianagaram and Kadapa be designated as territorial capitals for the development of Rayalaseema and North Andhra.

Mr. Ravindra Babu said the IEI local centre had taken the views of other associations and the public on the matter. The representation will be forwarded to the Siva Rama Krishnan Committee.

The engineers felt that there was no point running the administration of the new State for 10 years from another State. “It should be done from within the residuary State from Day One. The several sick engineering colleges could be used as offices on a temporary basis,” they said.
