Emerson Process Management, a global business of Emerson, has completed automation of the 800 MW supercritical thermal power generation unit at Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district. Billed as a first supercritical thermal power station in the country, APGenco’s Krishnapatnam plant is designed to provide new, low emissions generation capacity to support the State’s economic growth.
The new power station utilised supercritical boiler/turbine technology that operates at a higher temperature than the traditional coal-fired units boosting efficiency of energy generation while reducing carbon and other emissions. Emerson was selected as main automation contractor by the EPC contractor for critical sections of the plant, Tata Projects Ltd, and the first unit is ready to begin commercial operations while Emerson was currently automating the second unit.
At the new unit, Emerson’s Oviation distributed control system monitors and controls plant equipment and processes including the boiler, water treatment system and other critical balance-of-plant processes. The company also installed Rosemount measurement and analytical technologies to monitor sections of the plant for optimal performance.

According to a press release, Emerson’s automation technology had been selected for more than 300 of these complex units worldwide 10 of which are located in India.
