“ELT should be specific to the student’s needs”

A common formula cannot be applied for improving the quality of English teaching and it needs to be devised personally by each teacher depending on the students’ level of understanding and their specific needs opined speakers at a national seminar on Continuing Professional Development in English Language Teaching.

At the Andhra Loyola Institute of Engineering and Technology here on Saturday, the national seminar attracted more than 100 delegates from all over the country and several engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Jesuit Province, The Provincial P. Antony touched upon need for improving the quality of education with better teaching skills among the faculty to attract students to the institutions.

The Loyola ELT Centre had been conducting some experiments in teaching methodologies and some of them were being implemented on the campus, said ELT Director P. Ramanujam. He detailed several methodologies being applied in India and other countries for the development in ELT. He said some of the methodologies followed universally had to be applied and some small changes made as per the individual’s perception of the requirement in a particular classroom.

Professor from Anna University English Department S.P. Dhanavel spoke at the special plenary session in the afternoon. Convener of the seminar K. Suneetha Reddy, College Principal O. Mahesh, Rector D. Ravi Sekhar, and College Director J. Thainese also spoke.
