Consultants give inputs on airport expansion

February 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

With the Airports Authority of India (AAI) working on upgrading Gannavaram airport to international standards, top consultants, including GVK, have submitted designs for the project.

A three-member team from GVK gave a presentation during a review meeting chaired by Union Minister of Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapati Raju at the airport recently. “The team members gave inputs on the airport development project. Besides GVK representatives, consultants from other companies, too, gave suggestions,” a senior airport official said.

He added that the inputs provided by the consultants on developing the terminal building had been forwarded to the AAI headquarters in New Delhi. The official said the inputs from the consultants had been accepted as part of the strategic planning. The AAI is likely to consider designs that are economically viable and ensure quality services to passengers, he added.

Thanks to the airport’s proximity to the upcoming capital city at Tullur in Guntur district, a battery of politicians, senior bureaucrats, industrialists and real-estate businessmen are visiting Vijayawada and its surroundings to enquire about business prospects.

Meanwhile, the extension works of the existing terminal building have commenced. Departure and ticketing counters and backup office for airline companies will come up after the completion of works.

New conveyor belts at arrival and departure counters will also be established. A 500 kv generator will be used as standby in case of interruption in regular power supply.
