The week started off with a bang for the chess fraternity as 27-year-old Goli Sandhya and 28-year-old K.V.K. Karthik brought laurels to city in two different genres of tournaments.
Sandhya, a Master of Computer Application (MCA) graduate from JNTU-Anantapur, proved her mettle by winning a silver medal in the World Amateur Chess Championship in the women’s category that concluded in Greece on Tuesday. This feat also helped her achieve the Women Chess Master (WCM) title.
Sandhya (1701) hauled 88 points for her podium finish and she will be preparing for a world women open tournament to be held in USA in July. She took part in tournaments held in Singapore, USA, Romania, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

Fide Master K.V.K. Karthik (2045) scored six points out of seven rounds to win the physically disabled national individual chess championship for men organised by Tamil Nadu Physically Disabled Chess Association concluded at Tiruchirapalli recently. With this victory, K.V.K Karthik, is qualified to represent India for 15th IPCA Individual Chess Championship to be held in Slovakia from June 8 to 27. Earlier, Karthik won a gold medal at Commonwealth chess championship at Glasgow (Scotland) and a bronze at the World championship at Apatin - Banja Junakovic, Serbia in 2014.
