Essay writing, poster presentation, elocution and quiz contests go a long way in promoting awareness on various scientific and environmental issues in students, said Andhra Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (APCOST) Hyderabad project director P.V. Subba Rao.
Prizes were distributed to students of seven government schools who participated in various competitions conducted on the day. Vijayawada Regional Science Centre Project Officer J Dilleswara Rao explained the programmes being conducted by the APCOST.
He said that over 300 students from ZP High School Guntupalli, SMAK Urdu High School, Bhavanipuram, GSMC High School, Ramarajyanagar, Railway High School, Guntupalli, ZP Highschool, Jammavaram and ZP High School, Kondapalli, participated in the competitions conducted on the occasion.

Resource person T. Srikumar speaking about the importance of the Ozone Layer said the Ozone layer could be protected by reducing vehicular pollution by upgrading the technology, reducing consumption of power and utilising solar energy. He said harmful rays would enter the earth's atmosphere and they would cause skin cancer, he said.
Renewable energy district manager G. Satyanaryana said better utilisation of solar energy would help in closing of the hole in the ozone layer. Prizes and certificates were distributed to students who won in the poster presentation and drawing competitions. The APCOST coordinator B. Nageswara Rao, and others participated in the programme.
