City Police Commissioner B. Srinivasulu on Tuesday said concerted efforts put in jointly by the Transport Department and the city police had resulted in a drop in the number of road accidents.
Speaking after flagging off an auto-rickshaw rally taken out from the office of the Deputy Traffic Commissioner (DTC) on Bandar Road as part of the ongoing 25 Road Safety Week observed by the Transport Department, Mr. Srinivasulu said every individual must be educated about road safety norms.
He said last year, the city witnessed over 30 murders. But the number of road accidents was 10 times more than that, i.e. nearly 300 road mishaps due to which many number of families suffered on various counts.

DTC Ch. Shivalingaiah said a series of awareness activities had been taken up as part of the week-long exercise. The whole objective of the annual programme was to enhance the awareness-level among road users and bring down the number of accidents. Essay writing competition for students, rally with new vehicles by dealers and medical camps would be organised to sensitise the public, he said. Nearly 600-odd auto-rickshaws participated in the rally.
Regional Transport Officer C.H.V.K. Subbarao, Administrative Officer T. Ramamohana Rao, Motor Vehicle Inspectors Ravindra, Nagamurali and T.V.N. Subbarao, team leader M. Rajababu and a host of other officials participated.
