CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat has expressed concern over the adverse impact that the policy of globalisation being pursued by the ruling class is having on women in the country. She said it was unfortunate that the women continued to be discriminated against even now.
Ms. Karat, who was attending the extended meeting of the Central Committee of the CPI(M), released the book “Woman and Socialism” authored by German socialist thinker and journalist August Babel in 1879, which has been reprinted by the All India Democratic Women's Association. AIDWA national president Subhashini Ali, general secretary Sudha Sundararaman, assistant secretary Josephine, State vice-president S. Punyavathi and others were present. Ms. Karat said that the book dealt with the problems faced by women in the contemporary society when it was written more than 100 years ago. It was still relevant in view of the many challenges women continued to face in capitalist societies, and, hence, the AIDWA reprinted it.
She said that the apathy of the governments towards the problems of women was evident in the manner in which the Central Government had failed to provide basic amenities to women construction workers engaged in the preparations for the Commonwealth Games. Governments as well as courts had not been able to address the problems the women were facing, she said.
