Jasti Sambasiva Rao, Municipal Corporator of 8th Division, suffered serious injuries during the burning of an effigy of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy on NH-5 here on Friday. The incident took place during a protest organised by the Telugu Desam Party against certain objectionable remarks made by Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. TDP leaders and activists took out a rally from the party office on the feeder road and staged a demonstration at the Ramesh Hospitals junction.

During an attempt by the police to thwart the protest, a TDP activist sprinkled petrol on the effigy and lit it when Mr. Sambasiva Rao held it close to him. In the melee, Mr. Rao sustained burns on the chest and face.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital. The TDP activists vent their anger at a police officer holding him responsible for the incident. An enraged party activist threw the policeman’s cap away, but stopped short of assaulting him.
