Steps were taken for converting the social welfare residential hostels into schools in a phased manner over the next three years.

This would be first done where the hostels are located in own buildings and have less than 50 students.

Speaking to mediapersons after having lunch with inmates of Social Welfare Girls’ Residential Hostel at Kasturibaipet here on Sunday, Mr. Kishore Babu said in addition to improving the standards of education, nutritious food is being supplied to the inmates of hostels while getting repairs to dilapidated buildings for the time being. There are 1,259 social welfare hostels in the State with a stotal student strength of 1.10 lakh. Textbooks and notebooks are being distributed to them free of cost, he said, reiterating that the government was committed to making government hostels deliver performances on a par with private institutions.
