Dance, song and hairstyle competitions were held as part of ‘Sphoorti’, a two-day intra-mural competitions that began at Andhra Loyola College on Monday, with the aim of bringing out the latent talents among the youngsters and provide them a forum to hone their skills.
Fr. Devaiah auditorium came alive with music and dance performances of talented youngsters, who sought to present their best skills to win in the competitions. That the dances of Michael Jackson are still a rage among the participants was evident, with three out of the 10 dancers presenting his items.
Wearing the trademark broad-rimmed hat and black suit, the young performers sweated out to capture the unforgettable style of the late American pop star. Several girls presented Bharatanatyam and other classical dances with ease.

Another highlight of “Sphoorti” was the hairstyle competition, in which boys outnumbered girls in presenting their varied styles. The organisers described it as an indication of the rising awareness of hairstyle preferences among the youngsters regardless of their backgrounds.
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanghatan district youth coordinator Jacob Prasanna, who was the chief guest, said that the students should not get carried away by the craze to become an engineer or a doctor or a software engineer. “They should rather focus on becoming a complete person. Personality development with all necessary good qualities is the need of the hour,” he said. Mr. Prasanna felt that participation in cultural programmes like “Sphoorti” would help students develop their personalities in a rounded manner and also bring out their innate talents. College Vice-Principal Rex Angelo said that the cultural programmes were being held every year for the past 10 years with the objective of bringing students of various subjects and departments together to share their skills and knowledge.
