Kolleru: public hearing held

June 14, 2010 06:53 pm | Updated 06:53 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

People who are affected by the Kolleru Lake operation have taken to the streets saying that the State government has failed to keep its promise of providing alternative employment.

They, at the same time, held Central government responsible for violation of human rights and for not protecting their “right to food” enshrined in the Constitution. The Food First Information and Action Network Society (FIAN) conducted a public hearing on violation of right to food in areas around Kolleru Lake, here on Sunday.

On the occasion, the speakers and participants had alleged that the government failed to ensure food for all. The people were evicted from Kolleru Lake on the pretext of environmental issues four years ago. The government moreover remained mute spectator to pollution of the Lake.

The people, however, were not provided any alternate employment, they said. FIAN south Asia desk incharge--UN lobby worker, Sabine Pabst, said that the Indian government failed in protecting the natural resources and people depended on it.
