December 17, 2009 01:11 pm | Updated 01:11 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA

The police forcibly liftedTDP MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao and Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, who were sitting here on fast-unto-death seeking unified Andhra Pradesh, to shift them to a hospital, as their health deteriorated on the fifth day of the fast.

The shifting of the two leaders to the Government General Hospital resulted in tensions on Bandar Road. As the TDP activists sensed that the two fasting leaders would be lifted any moment, they gathered in large numbers at the camp.

To avoid being picked up by the police, Devineni Umamaheswa Rao and Bonda Umamaheswara Rao early in the day retreated into the Zila Parishad guest house on the road where they were sitting on fast and locked themselves up. No amount of persuasion by the police could make them come out of the guest house.

The police finally broke open the grill door of the guest house on the first floor and brought them out before whisking them away amidst much security to the Government General Hospital.

Congress MP Lagadapati Rajaopal's fast-unto-death, meanwhile, entered the third day with steady stream of Congress activists and others calling on him and expressing their solidarity with him.
