Attacks on police personnel: 12 arrested

People of Agiripalli urge IG to extern rowdy-sheeters from the area

Twelve persons, including TDP floor leader in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, were arrested on Tuesday in separate cases relating to attack on police personnel in the Krishna district on Monday.

In Agiripalli case, police rounded up seven accused, who reportedly attacked one SI and two constables, when the latter intercepted their vehicles. In the second incident, the One Town police arrested two persons for allegedly attacking a home guard.

Krishna District Superintendent of Police G. Vijay Kumar said the accused P. Umamaheswara Rao, his brother P. Shravan Kumar and others attacked SI Rajendra Prasad and constables when they were collecting data on rowdy-sheeters for Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS).

Knives seized

“We booked cases against 15 persons of which10 were arrested on Tuesday. Police seized knives from their possession. The accused were booked under Section 307 of IPC and for assault on public servants,” said the SP.

Nuzvid Deputy Superintendent of Police V. Srinivas said that Shravan Kumar and nine others were held and special teams have been formed to nab the remaining accused. The arrested will be produced in Nuzvid court, Mr. Srinivas told

In another incident which occurred under Vijayawada Police Commissionerate limits, the One Town police arrested TDP floor leader in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation G. Hari Babu and another person Srinivas for attacking a home guard for not allowing his vehicle near Kanakadurga temple.

“We arrested the accused and produced them before the magistrate. As per the instructions of the magistrate, we granted station bail,” said One Town Circle Inspector P. Venkateswarlu.

Action sought

When North Coastal Zone Inspector General of Police Kumar Vishwajeet visited Agiripalli, the locals explained the rowdy activities of TDP leader P. Umamaheshwara Rao and his brother P. Shravan Kumar and urged him to extern rowdy-sheeters from the area. “The accused developed contacts with some Ministers and public representatives and are resorting to settlements, collecting ‘mamools’ and are resorting to rowdysm in the area,” said the villagers.

Attacks condemned

Members of the Andhra Pradesh Police Officers’ Association condemned the attacks on police. In a statement here on Tuesday, association State president J. Srinivasa Rao and honorary president M. Gangadhar said some political leaders are encouraging the attackers.
