June 28, 2011 07:11 pm | Updated June 29, 2011 12:46 am IST - TIRUCHI:

A 30-year-old youth caused a flutter at the Tiruchi Airport on Tuesday morning after he managed to breach the security cordon by scaling over a wall around the airport and attempted to board a flight.

The man identified as Arunachalam of Kariyapatti near Arimalam in Pudukottai district had allegedly scaled over the wall in the periphery of the airport behind the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) barracks. He had walked undetected all the way up to the arrival side of the terminal building and made an attempt to board the Air Asia aircraft through a maintenance step ladder.

Sources said passengers were embarking the flight bound for Kula Lumpur through the aero bridge when Arunachalam was apprehended by airline security staff below on the tarmac. The youth had reportedly claimed that he wanted to go to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore in search of a job.

The youth was handed over to the CISF, in charge of security at the airport. After interrogation, he was handed over to the Airport Police. Police said the youth was mentally unstable and efforts were underway to verify his antecedents. Airport sources said a full fledged enquiry has been taken up into the security lapse.
