World Veterinary Day marked

Special awareness lectures, video show on symptoms of rabies, taking of oath on having pets free of rabies marked the observance of World Veterinary Day at Sri Sivananda Balalaya here recently.

The programme was jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Training and Research Centre, Sri Sivananda Balalaya and Samrakshana Pranimithra Society. The theme of the programme was ‘awareness on Zoonosis with special reference to rabies'.

M. Babu, professor and head, Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, spoke on Zoonosis – diseases transmitted from animal to man and man to animals. Dr. Babu gave details and statistics on incidence of rabies, fatality rate, symptoms, preventive measures and the need for spreading awareness among the public and the pet owners.

Video clippings on symptoms of rabies, hydrophobia etc, as well as posters explaining the seriousness of the rabies provided added information to the students.

Leading veterinarians, Anandgiri and Krishnaraj, both former directors of Department of Animal Husbandry, Sioranjivi Kumar of International Animal Rescue, shared their experiences on handling rabies and petcare, with the students.

Dr. Babu administered the oath ‘let us have pets free of rabies' to the students at the end.
