Close on the heels of a high-level meeting to call for private participation in the city beautification efforts, the Tiruchi Corporation has commenced works on sprucing up traffic islands and road medians across the city.
To start with, lawns are being developed inside traffic islands across the city. Over the past couple of days grass patches are being laid in the traffic islands, including those around the Chathram Bus Stand, the Muthareyar Statue Junction and other parts of the city.
The Corporation has identified about 22 traffic islands which are to be developed. Apart from carrying out landscaping works, other necessary infrastructure would also be created. Water fountains are also planned in some of the islands and the existing one at a traffic island near the Mutherayar Statue Junction has been renovated to be put into use.

“We have commenced improvement works on the traffic islands right away. Though we have called for private participation, the Corporation is making the initial investment. Private sponsors are welcome to contribute and also take up their maintenance,” Corporation Commissioner K.Veera Raghava Rao told
Mr.Rao also indicated that works on improving the 27 parks that have been identified for development in the first phase, would begin by the end of the month. “We have already started work on a park at Thillai Nagar West and the other parks would be covered soon,” he said.
The Commissioner also said that there has been a positive response to the recent meeting chaired by School Education Minister N.R.Sivapathi, calling for private participation in the beautification efforts. “We have already received some proposals,” he said.

Simultaneously, the Corporation has planned to take up a greening drive in the city and plans to plant about 8,000 saplings across the city soon. Saplings are also planted along road medians in places such as Bharathidasan Salai and Puthur High Road.
