Work on phase-II of UGD project begins in Tiruchi

On completion, 7,436 more households will come under the underground drainage network

The construction of the much-awaited phase-II of underground drainage (UGD) project to cover omitted areas in the city has begun.

Minister for Tourism Vellamandi N. Natarajan and Minister for Backward Classes and Minority Welfare S. Valarmathi flagged off the construction work for the phase-II UGD project at a function held at Viswas Nagar near old Palpannai on Sunday in the presence of Member of Parliament P. Kumar and Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran.

The project — estimated to cost ₹344 crore — will be implemented under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUIT).

Out of the estimated cost, the contribution of the Centre, State and Tiruchi Corporation will be in 50:30:20 ratio. For the speedy completion of works, the project has been divided into three packages. Of them, work order has been given for the second package. A sum of ₹73.48 crore will be spend for the second package.

According to official sources, under the second package, sewer lines will be laid for 66.55 km. The pumping mains will be laid for 12 km. Construction of 12 pumping stations and renovation of old sewage treatment plant are among the components of second package works.

Several residential and commercial areas of 19 wards, which were omitted in the phase-I of UGD project, have been included in the phase-II project. Sanjivi Nagar, AUT colony (Woraiyur), Fathima Nagar, Vekkaliamman Nagar, Cauvery Nagar, John thoppu, Devathanam, Ananda avenue, Dharanallur (North), Pichai Nagar, Viswas Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Akilandeswari Nagar, Natharsha Pallivasal, Maris Avenue, Friends Enclave, Raja Colony, Ammaiyappa Nagar, Geetha Nagar, Annamalai Nagar and Jayam Nagar are among the residential areas that have been included in the phase-II UGD project in the city.

On completion, 7,436 more households will come under the UGD network. In addition to them, UGD connections will be given to 3,286 commercial establishments in the city.
