Visually-challenged girls come out in flying colours

Collector S. Palanisamy honouring S.Keerthana, a visually-challenged girl who secured 1,139 marks in Plus Two examination, in Nagapattinam on Friday.

With all the 22 girls emerging successful, the Government Higher Secondary School for the Blind in Tiruchi has recorded 100 per cent pass in the Plus Two examination this year.

Three students – T.Hemalatha (1,020), M.Sivarajani (1,019), and K.Preetha (1,015) – have come out in flying colours by scoring more than 1,000 marks.

Ms.Hemalatha completed her SSLC examination through the Indian Association for Blind and joined Plus One at Tiruchi School. “I was not aware that there was an exclusive school for blind girls and I had to struggle hard to pursue my education till class 9 under normal stream,” she said. “I worked hard for seven to eight hours a day, said Hemalatha, who wanted to become an IAS officer.

Special efforts taken by the headmistress and teachers encouraged students to work hard and achieve laurels, said Saminathan, District Disabled Welfare Officer.

Vijayakumari, headmistress of the school, said that she identified slow learners and organised special coaching for them.

Frequent tests, particularly during the pre-half-yearly period, helped students score well.

NAGAPATTINAM: Another visually-challenged girl, who studied in a regular school, has registered impressive achievement in Nagapattinam. S.Keerthana, a student of Municipal Higher Secondary School in the town, had secured 1,139 marks with centum in three subjects: Auditing, Practical I and II. Teachers helped me understand the subjects better by putting in special efforts in helping me understand them.

S.Palanisamy, District Collector, honoured her with a memento and appreciated her.

I want to become a teacher, said Keerthana, who wishes to pursue under-graduation in English literature.

Chandramohan, District Disabled Welfare Officer, was among those present.
