Vadeesamangalam tank, one of the major tanks in Needamangalam taluk in Tiruvarur district, has got a fresh lease of life thanks to the participation of City Union Bank (CUB) in renovating the waterbody.
The CUB had accepted the plea of Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association for desilting 14 tanks in and around Needamangalam. In the first phase, the bank had taken up rehabilitation of four tanks including Vadeesamangalam, Edannavasal, Paruthikottai and Moovanallur. The exercise was executed through the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association.
With the completion of all works including deepening, desilting and strengthening of bunds, Vadeesamangalam tank has got a new lease of life. In addition to it, the rehabilitation of Samanthan Cauvery and Moovanallur drain for about 12 km has also been completed. Thanks to the current spell of rain, the storage at Vadeesamangalam tank has reached its maximum level and excess water is flowing into the Bamini river.

“The Vadeesamangalam tank has been desilted after several decades. It is an example of corporate social responsibility serving a public cause,” says P.R. Pandian, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association.
He said though the rehabilitation work was estimated to cost around ₹85 lakh, all works were completed with ₹35 lakh. The remaining amount had been returned to the CUB, he added.
N. Kamakodi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, CUB, said the bank has committed to support the rehabilitation of Edannavasal, Paruthukottai and Moovanallur tanks. The works would be completed within the current financial year.
