Bar associations and other advocate bodies should organise workshops and symposia periodically for updating knowledge of the members of the bar, particularly the young advocates, said R. Subbiah, Judge of the Madras High Court.
Laying the foundation for the combined court buildings in Thuraiyur on Sunday, Mr. Subbiah said that legal profession was considered a noble one as lawyers and advocates had a great responsibility in delivering justice. A growing awareness among the public about their role to protect their rights and confidence about judiciary system had resulted in increase in the number of cases. Steep growth in population coupled with increase in the litigation costs led to accumulation of cases, he said underlining the role of lawyers in delivering justice on the grounds of ‘equality, fairness and compassion.’
He urged bar associations to organise symposium and workshops periodically so that advocates would gain an in-depth knowledge about various laws and acts.

Mr. Subbiah said that the construction of combined court building would go a long way in improving the efficiency of advocates, judicial officers and provide a great facility to the litigant public. “The court in Thuraiyur was established in 1926. The new infrastructure particularly spacious court halls would enhance the efficiency of the judiciary,” he said. He hoped the construction of the combined court buildings would be executed to meet the long felt need of the people.
A number of speakers urged Mr. Subbiah to sanction a sub-court for Thuraiyur. Now, only weekly courts are being held here on Fridays when judicial officers from Tiruchi take up cases of civil appeal, original suits and Hindu Marriage Act petitions although a number of cases under other categories such as land acquisition petitions and motor vehicle accident cases were yet to be taken up for hearing.
B. Rajendran, Judge of the Madras High Court, endorsing the demand, said his father Balasundaram, also an advocate in 1982, had adopted a resolution at a law seminar pleading for a permanent sub-court in Thuraiyur indicating the need of the public and lawyers. He expressed the hope that Mr. Subbiah would take immediate action for sanctioning a permanent sub-court for Thuraiyur.

N. Uthirapathy, president of Thuraiyur Bar Association, A.S. Manoharan, secretary of Bar Association, N. Rangasamy, T.R. Ramamoorthy and A. Ganesan, all advocates, underlined the need for setting up the sub-court in the town.

The combined court buildings will have magistrate court and munsiff court and would be constructed on the sprawling space available at the existing old building at an estimate of about Rs.3.75 crore.
