District Collectors convene meetings to take stock, chalk out measures

The district administration has planned to supply water to all water-starved areas in the district through tankers.

At a consultative meeting held here on Monday, Darez Ahamed, District Collector, said the problem was acute in areas where there is no piped supply. Local body officials and representatives should identify such clusters and ensure direct supply of water through tankers.

Tanks should be set up in such areas for supplying water through tankers. All the deep borewells and potable sources should be repaired and maintained for augmenting water supply. Any snag, should be set right on a war footing, he said, underlining the need for according top priority for drinking water supply .

Ayyamperumal, project director, District Rural Development Agency, and Chandrasekaran, Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, were present.

PUDUKOTTAI: In a similar endeavour, Pudukottai District Collector C.Manoharan advised officials to conduct a survey on the number of tanks, mini power pumps, deep borewells and hand pumps available in the district.

Any significant depletion or total failure at water source should be ascertained and alternative arrangements should be made to ensure prompt supply. The Collector advised officials to expedite the works on setting up new borewells and deepening existing ones. Defunct open wells should be closed to avert accidents. Zonal officers have been nominated to closely monitor the supply situation. They would visit various villages and ascertain the availability of water at source .

Adequate attention should be paid for supply of water to livestock and block development officers should keep a vigil in this regard.

The zonal officers would prepare a weekly report and present it at the review meeting to be conducted by the Collector on Fridays.

THANJAVUR: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board and local bodies should take joint action to resolve short supply in rural pockets , said N.Subbaiyan, District Collector. At a meeting convened to evolve special plans to overcome problems caused by the depletion of groundwater here on Monday, the Collector advised officials to collect data on actual requirement, gap between demand and supply, and status of works taken up for augmenting water supply. He advised officials to set up borewells wherever required and follow up on the decisions of the meeting.

The district administration would extend all assistance to local bodies for executing water supply schemes and officials should directly inspect municipalities, town and village panchayats to get a firsthand knowledge of the requirements on the ground.

Strict action will be initiated against negligent officials. Quality plastic water tanks should be erected on a temporary basis, and snags in supply lines should be rectified immediately, so that distribution is not affected.
