Celebration of 2012 as the National Year of Mathematics was enough reason for RSK Junior School to conduct an exhibition involving almost all students from levels VI to X in honour of Mathematical Genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose extraordinary contribution to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions is extolled worldwide.
As many as 1,500 students came together on Thursday to present over 350 exhibits including working models, games, and puzzles replete with the potential to generate a higher inclination to learn the subject in the years ahead. Teachers of neighbourhood schools were invited as judges for the exhibition titled ‘Ramanujan 125’ that was inaugurated by K. Kannan, Dean, Department of Mathematics, SASTRA University.
According to Mathematics teachers in the school, the students utilised the opportunity to experiment with innovative models depicting textual concepts. All the participating students will receive certificates while winners will be honoured with prizes, School Headmistress Arockia Mary said. “With working models, students understand the subject quicker. The exhibits will be considered as projects for the third cycle of formative assessment under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system,” Ms. Arockia Mary said. The exhibition, she added, will be kept open on Friday for the benefit of students of other schools in the area.
